The former John Motley School, once also known as Near North Elementary School, at 739 N. Ada St. received a preliminary Chicago Landmark designation at the May 5 meeting of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks.
The school was one of the 49 shuttered by CPS and one of two purchased by a developer last year. The same developer also purchased the shuttered Peabody School.
This is the only one of the shuttered schools which has entered the landmarks process but two more are planned in the near future. All three are intended as residential conversions.
Preservation Chicago supports the protection of as many of the 49 shuttered schools as possible. These schools were executed by some of Chicago’s greatest architects as testaments to the importance of youth and education and make up an important part of the built of various communities.
