Great news this weekend as the Archdiocese of Chicago officially announced that St. Gelasius/”Shrine of Christ the King Sovereign Priest”, originally constructed as St. Clara Church-6401 S. Woodlawn Avenue will be stabilized and restored rather than demolished following a tragic fire, the second in its history.
Preservation Chicago raised $650,000 in pledges to save the Landmark structure and the Archdiocese has officially transferred the building to the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. This was the second time in its history a tragic fire has resulted in a threat of demolition of this designated Chicago Landmark building. Preservation Chicago was instrumental in saving the building and encouraging its designation more than a decade ago.
We applaud the Archdiocese for embracing a preservation solution for this important spiritual and cultural landmark and to the donors who helped make it possible. Our special thanks to our preservation partners, members of the community and parishioners of the church.
