Hope still remains for St. Gelasius/”Shrine of Christ the King Sovereign Priest”, originally constructed as St. Clara Church-6401 S. Woodlawn Avenue.
For the second time in its history a tragic fire has resulted in a threat of demolition of this designated Chicago Landmark building. Preservation Chicago was instrumental in saving the building and encouraging its designation more than a decade ago.
We are currently working with the community, parishioners, the city and the Archdiocese of Chicago to encourage a re-use or a reconstruction of this important Woodlawn landmark. It’s one of the few Roman Catholic Churches in Chicago that are protected landmarks, making its potential loss even more tragic.
If you’re like to be involved, visit SavetheShrine.org, sign the petition here and contact both the Archdiocese and the city to remind them that landmarked buildings are our shared heritage.
