St. Adalbert’s Feast Day is Saturday, April 23 and the parish has invited the general public to attend the multi-lingual service (in Polish, English and Spanish) at 1 p.m. A celebration feast will follow at the church, 1650 West 17th Street.
Dialogue regarding the church’s future continues at this time with the Archdiocese of Chicago and members of the parish. Preservation Chicago is encouraging these to continue and also begin the process of a landmark designation of this historic church, which could make available “Adopt a Landmark” funds following the expansion of that ordinance last week in the city council.
Taken together with the recent large donation, this could address the church’s necessary masonry work to its towers and facade. The church authorities would need to consent to designation per the landmark ordinance. Preservation Chicago would applaud such a move by the Archdiocese, which would also send a strong message, not just to the local community, but to the Catholic community in Pilsen and beyond that this historic structure will not be demolished for development.
